A firm mattress for Degenerative Disc Disease & soft for Shoulder and Hip Pain‏

Elaine writes:

Hello Peter and thank you for your knowledgeable blog.

My husband and I are purchasing a king bed and trying to find a mattress that will work for both of us.  He has some hip and shoulder pain at night from arthritis.

My doctor has told me that any firm mattress should do for some disc problems I have [DDD]. We both like a plush feel but it sounds as though I need something more firm than will be comfortable for him.

Do you have any suggestion for a compromise? Elaine

Hi Elaine,

For the most part, you have to go with a firm mattress and add a latex topper to soften the surface.

The most popular of these combination sleep systems is the Simmons World Class Annapolis Place in firm and a 2" soft Talalay Latex topper.

We recommend this for the longevity it offers. Most of today's mattresses that are soft enough for him, won't keep their shape for very long, resulting in pain for both of you.

With the firm mattress/soft latex topper combination, you both get what you need and it will last a long time.

That being said, there is one mattress that has a plush surface that will keep its shape…and is form enough for you. It's an old fashioned double sided flippable mattress that has been field tested for durability under heavy body weight for the past 5 years…and still looks and feels like new. Made by Therapedic, it's the Keepsake Cameo Plush.

Here are links to all the products I've proposed to you.
