A Good Economy Mattress for a slender woman with scoliosis.

Rachel writes:

Hi Pete,

I’m so glad I found your website.  I've learned a lot just from reading your previous posts.  But I’d also like some advice.  I’m 27, 5’6”, and 105 lbs.  I also have scoliosis, causing lower back problems, and some upper.  I've had my current mattress since I was 19, it was only $350, and it’s a pillow top and has definitely started to dip.  I believe it is exacerbating some issues I've been having recently.  I sit most of the day at work and I've recently pulled a muscle in my back. While Pilates and massage have helped,  having a bed that doesn't support me properly I think is making things worse.  Also, I live in a studio apartment in NYC, which makes my bed a main piece of furniture for me.

I had an interesting experience while traveling in Europe last month.  At a cousins house, they had a horribly soft bed, just a mattress, and every morning I woke up with sore hips, back, and shoulders.  However, every hostel bed was great!  I think that means I need a firmer mattress.

I’m currently looking around online for a firm full mattress, no pillowtop.  However, I’m a single women in my 20s, and my budget isn't very high.  Would you recommend a Sealy Posturepedic of some kind?  I saw a Rosehore Firm Full Set for $600.  I also like the idea of a latex topper as well.  I may have to invest in the bed first, and save again for the topper.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Rachel

Hi Rachel,

We are no longer recommending Sealy Posturepedics because of all the memory foam that's in them. The memory foam loses its shape and you are back to square one before you know it….and I know you can't afford to waste your money on memory foam.

I have a nice selection of one-sided mattresses from Therapedic, at very reasonable prices. They use the same coil system as the Sealy, or the old Stearns & Foster. They are all padded with good quality foams…and NO MEMORY FOAM in any of them….and all providing good support. They are in your price range and delivery is free from Boston to Miami…and, no sales tax.

Here is a link to those mattresses. You can order them on-line.

And while there's nothing wrong with your pro-active choices, my orthopedic surgeon and my chiropractor agree that walking 30 minutes a day is among the best physical therapy.

Thanks, Pete
