Simmons Beautyrest plush mattress, hip & neck pain.

Latoya writes:

Hi Peter,

My husband and I are looking for a new mattress but aren't sure which mattress is right for us. We are both average sized and both are now experiencing back pain as well as hip and neck pain for myself from not sleeping on proper support for the past year. We've layed around and kind of settled on the BeautyRest World Class Recharge Shakespeare Luxury Plush. This model felt the best to us and seemed to have all the right components of a durable mattress for our price range. We were very impressed and intrigued with the latex in it. However, we didn't complete the sale due to feeling like the salesman was playing games. I just wanted to know your honest expert opinion of this model. Also please let me know if there is something comparable from another brand or series we should consider. One more thing, do you think a latex pillow would be helpful to me. Aside from just the neck pain, I have  Hydrocephalus and at times it's very difficult for me to lay on the same pillow from one night to the next due to it feeling like a brick because of the inter cranial pressure. Sorry for the curve ball. Thank You so Very Much and I look forward to your response. Latoya

Hi Latoya,

The only problem with your choice is that it is a "plush" Beautyrest.

The plush models use a much thinner gauge wire, which creates a greater depth of softness.

These mattresses can be extremely comfortable initially, which is why so many are sold.

However, if you research complaints about Simmons, you'll find that they are many.

Almost all of them are about their plush and plush pillowtop models.

That thin gauge wire coil loses its shape in short order and you be lucky if it lasts you a year.

What yours and everyone else's body needs is,

1) firm support for your spine, and

2) a comfortable sleeping surface to relieve pressure points and relax your muscles.

Together, the support and comfort produces a deep and restorative night's sleep.

You simply won't get that with a plush Beautyrest mattress….not for very long, at any rate.

However, you are very close. The same mattress is available in Luxury Firm.

Even so, you will have issues with body impressions, which is common.

The poly and memory foams used in today's mattresses, will take a body impression almost immediately.

But, there is a way around that, as well. Add a 2" layer of soft Talalay Latex to the top of the mattress and you will avoid that problem.

Latex is the most durable material available. For it to work properly for you, it must be at the surface.

A thin layer of latex, inside a mattress, is good for nothing more than marketing.

Soft latex produces that "yummy feel", (as my wife puts it), which will give you comfort that lasts for many years.

My wife and I use one on our Beautyrest at home. The very same latex topper I'm recommending to you…is 5 years old and still like new.

No other type of foam performs nearly as well.

As a major side benefit, the latex topper, being so very resilient, absorbs much of your body weight.

The mattress under it will last twice as long as it would without it….making it a quality purchase that more than pays for itself.

Here are our links to the comparable model World Class Beautyrest and to the latex topper.

It's likely you can get both from us for less than those pirates charge for just the mattress.

Concerning the pillow, a soft latex pillow is extremely comfortable and long lasting.
The second and lesser expensive one on this link, is the one I would recommend for you.
