Firm and comfy mattress for large people.

Hi Pete. We recently spent $1400 for a new king mattress set that has turned into a nightmare. The bed has hills (in the middle) and valleys on both sides where our bodies reside. We need a recommendation for a semi firm mattress that won't take us on a national geographic tour each night. Hubby is 280 pounds and I'm 200. The mattress had some minor damage (dirt on the side), so we bought it "As is". Stuck with it! Starting over! Need sound advice so we don't repeat this fiasco. Thanks in advance.
Hello. Ok then. Let's start with a couple of basic lessons.
The first is in physics and what it takes to support your body weights.
Unlike a wooden chair, for instance, an upholstered product begins to wear the moment you start using it. Given this, and what you weigh, the mattress you buy next will need to be firm.
You also have to understand that the mattress industry, as a whole, is an intentionally deceptive business. A sales person will tell you whatever you want to hear to make the sale. And while they may not be all that well schooled on the products and their components, how they work or what's right for you, they are very highly trained in perceiving what it will take to get you to the desk to write up the sale….and they take full advantage of that…and subsequently, you.

I can already hear you objecting to a firm mattress. You don't like a firm mattress.
Ok, that's fine. There is a way around that, as well.
It takes years to fully understand this business. Consumer Reports published a mattress issue, where they admitted that the subject was much too complex to understand and therefore, was unable to make any recommendations. After coming under fire for their honesty, they interviewed a group of people in the Denver area, published their findings based on that small amount of people without actually attempting to understand the products, and let it go at that.
Their conclusions were mostly wrong, based on incomplete information. Catching some flack for that, as well, they more recently tested 12 mattresses….that would be 12 out of the approx. 12,000 different mattress models currently on the market. Again, their conclusions were mostly incorrect.
So, you take my word for it, that the only upholstery material available that will provide long lasting comfort to people of your size, is latex. Since the 1920s, has been the best material available for use in or as a mattress. This is an undisputed fact.
So, your only hope for that comfortably soft mattress, is to add a layer of soft latex to the firm mattress you must have. Together, you'll end up with firm support for your skeletal system, and a soft sleeping surface to relieve your pressure points and relax muscles. And just as importantly, it won't be a waste of money.
Your $1400 is gone. It can't be part of your mattress investment. You can't say that since you already spent that money, that you can not now afford to spend much more. I'm afraid that you'll just have to "let it go". You went for a bargain that was no bargain, and you got stung.
Here are links to the mattress I recommend for you and the topper.
