How long do you think the life of a good quality mattress, like a Simmons Beautyrest Black Alexia, would really last even though they claim to have a 25 year warranty? It just seems to me that things will wear and tear with years of use regardless of what the manufacture says. I’m thinking 10 years max is more like it before it starts to sink in the middle, am I on the right track?
I’ve tested out the Oceanside at Macy’s which I heard is similar to the Alexia. The sales person at Macys is claiming that the cashmere topping material on Oceanside is better than the topping of local retailer’s Black version, which I’m not sure is true or not?
It looks like the Evie in the Black line is the firmest of the 3 models offered. Would that be as firm as the Alexia considering it has a pillowtop? A friend once told me to never buy any mattress with a pillowtop, especially if extra firm is what I’m looking for. Thank you again in advance Pete!, Jenn
It’s no secret, about the mind set of the American consumer. More is better…if it’s more expensive it must be better…etc. The higher end of every line appeals to that mind set. Mattresses like the Simmons Black models are very well padded, very luxurious feeling, appealing to our American habit of luxury & excess….and what I refer to as “a sucker’s bet”. Because of all the extra padding, they are more susceptible to deep body impressions. They are the biggest waste of money in the industry.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t object to anyone spoiling themselves when they have the means to do so. What I object to, is allowing yourself to be seduced into buying overly expensive products that promise luxury but deliver only short term results…hence, the sucker’s bet.
There is an easy way to achieve that sort of comfort, for less money and with much longer lasting performance. Latex is and has been the hallmark of quality and comfort since the 1920s. It isn’t hyped the way memory foam is, so you don’t think to ask for it. Latex is expensive. Memory foam is expensive. Latex is expensively made. Memory foam is cheaply made. Lots of profit in memory foam, which accounts for all the hype.
If you want the feel of a high end bed, get a good quality lesser expensive firmer mattress, like the Simmons Black Alexia.
Add a removable pillowtop made of soft latex, which will last for many years, as latex is natural rubber and the most resilient material used in the mattress industry. It’s so resilient, that it will absorb most of your body weight without letting you sink through it, the way memory foam does. Any mattress you use will work far less because of the latex pillow topper and last far longer than it would alone.
The Black line is several years old. 7 to 8 years based on average body weight is what I would suspect. Of course, the firmer model outlast the softer ones…tight tops outlast pillowtops. Add the latex pillow topper, and you’ll double the longevity of any mattress. Here are links to those products. Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.
