I really like your mattress blog and have been reading it to see what I can learn about my daughter. She is 16 and has pain in the bottom of her neck, and top of her back. The pain, we have been told, is from very loose ligaments, rapid growth in height and poor posture. She was fine on her twin mattress though but then we bought her a Queen-Size Summerfield fusion Jennifer Plush mattress (didn’t know then how many experts don’t like memory foam). The first night she slept on it, she woke up with pretty significant pain (she had never woken up in pain before. Usually just has it after painting, standing up or walking for a long time, etc…) It was also the first night she slept on her new IKEA queen size platform bed.
We are able to return the mattress to the place we have bought it but we are not sure what new mattress to buy. I have been looking around and my favorite so far has been:
the BeautyRest Black Ocean Side Extra Firm (at macy’s).
So I have three questions for you :
1) I am wondering what your views of this mattress are?
2) She never sleeps on her back. She use to sleep only on her stomach but is trying to shift to sleep on her side. She also only weighs 120 pounds and is 5’7″. Would it still be a good bed for those positions and her size?
3) I was also told today that it makes no sense to put a really good mattress on a cheap platform bed — which obviously IKEA’s bed is – approximately $300. I read your specifications for slats – they are only 2 1/2 inches apart from each other, but each slat is only 1/2 inch thick. Could this have contributed to her pain when she slept on the mattress or is it really most relevant for the long term survival of the mattress? (Someone said we could buy a board to put over the slats if we need to, but I read on your site that this can breed mold etc, so I definitely don’t want to do that.)
I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thank you so much
Her pain was caused by the memory foam, and not her platform bed.
If she were heavier, I’d suggest getting a bunkie board to put over the slats, which is something you can do…but shouldn’t be necessary. (Available on Sears’ website)
The Simmons Black models are something we recommend for people carrying twice the body weight that your daughter has. It’s much more mattress than you need.
I would suggest a Beautyrest World Class model. They are also available in extra firm, but would suggest going with a luxury firm instead.
The extra firm tends to be too firm for a female side sleeper. The luxury firm will give better at the hip….and do a much better job of maintaining the natural alignment of her spine.
