Simmons Black Ava, Latex Foam, Two Sided Flippable Mattress.

Len writes:
Hi Pete,

I have been reading info on your site and am interested in the Simmons Black Ava Luxury Firm mattress. However, I am confused. This confusion may just be due to the expanse of time between certain responses and the advances made in materials during that time. I initially understood latex to be the best material for a mattress and that ‘memory’ foams were inferior, over time. Then the Simmons Black Ava became a favorite and is considered the strongest mattress available today, and it seems to be made, at least in part, of memory foam. The breakdown list of its layer does not specifically say ‘latex’ anywhere. I want to be sure this mattress will stay firm. Also, is the Black Ava flippable? I’m old school, and believe mattress life is extended by flipping and rotating on a regular basis.

I have found your website the most helpful source for trying to sort out the whole mattress buying process. I thank you for the work and time you expend to help the public with an important and relatively expensive purchase. Sincerely, Len

Hi Len,
The blog is several years old and the information contained in it can be dated.
Basic premises remain the same…firm support, long lasting comfort, etc.
Memory foam has been terrible stuff since its inception 18 years ago.
Over the years, there have been many, so called, improvements…most turned out to be gimmicks.
A few years ago, Simmons developed their “Next Generation” memory foam.
I was not quick to believe the claims they made, based on the lack of performance up to that point. We’ve all seen the pictures of memory foam with the hand print that remains. That doesn’t happen with Simmons’ NxG memory foam. The foam recovers immediately. It is far less temperature sensitive than regular memory foam and I have been impressed with the lack of complaints over these past few years. So much so, that I bought one of their Black Models for our son. When we moved, a few months later, I got one for my wife and I.

There’s more to the Black models than the NxG memory foam. The poly foam is pre-compressed for reduced body impressions and half the coils are made of a triple strand wire. Of the mattresses you can commonly try at various stores, these are the strongest made. They are the strongest of the individually pocketed coil units…which is an important unit for maintaining proper spinal alignment.

If you’ll notice, Almost every recommendation for a Simmons Beautyrest also includes the addition of a latex topper. That’s how we use it at home. After these few years, our mattress is in like new condition…due to the use of the latex topper.

We do offer some two sided mattresses that you can flip. They are very high quality, made to my specifications. They are not regular, production line models and you can’t try them anywhere. Of all the innerspring mattresses, they are the longest lasting…with the Cameo models a good choice for most people, and the Medi-Coil models for very heavy people. These were test marketed under very heavy people when they were introduced a few years ago. Many have been sold and the complaint rate is very low. I’m please to say, they hold up very well. Here are links to the Simmons Black, the latex toppersand to the Two Sided mattresses.
