We are large people. My husband is heavy, weighing 275 lbs and I weigh 180 lbs. We have a 2 year old mattress with a 20 year guarantee that I have sent back twice but they don’t really do anything with it but just send it back. We need another new mattress. We bought this from a local store in LA, to whom I paid $1600 for this mattress. We went to a large chain store in the LA area and they want $2000 for the same mattress, which is a Stearns and Foster. Since everyone puts their own model name on the same mattress, how do you know if you are getting the same one the other store recommended or do Macy’s and Sears also carry Stearns and Foster but under other names.
First off, you’re barking up the wrong tree. There’s nothing that S&F makes today, that will support a man your husband’s size for very long. You’ll find yourself in the same boat you’re in now, before a year has passed.
To answer your question, the only effective way to shop is to shop the specifications of the mattress. It’s the only way to truly know if you’re shopping apples to apples.
You’re wasting your time at chain stores…in fact, most stores. They are geared to sell mattresses loaded with memory foam and their showroom floors are a sea of pillowtop models.
Both, memory foam & pillowtops are the main reason why mattresses fail so quickly and easily…even under average body weight.
All of the name brand mattresses have engineered their mattresses to need replacing within a few years. This is done with memory foam, which will return to its original shape when you get off of the mattress…having lost it’s support and comfort while you’re on the mattress. This diabolical product allows them to lengthen warranties to create the illusion of quality, while rarely having to make good on any of them….because the memory foam does not measure a sustained impression deep enough for you to prevail in a warranty claim.
To add insult to injury, memory foam off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made…chemicals like Formaldehyde and Benzene…just to name a couple of the 61 chemicals used to make it.
Now, if you would like to buy a mattress that is comfortable, supportive, chemical free and will last you for many years, an all natural latex mattress has been the best you can buy for the last 100 years. Avoid the advertising hype of memory foam and you’re ahead of the game that the industry plays with the consumers.
We carry 3 brands of latex mattresses: Pure Bliss, Natura and Ever-Eden.
The Ever-Eden is the least expensive…not as elaborately made as the other two and arriving to you via UPS…still, all natural high quality latex.
Pure Bliss and Natura come with white glove delivery…no sales tax on any of them…an especially nice additional savings to LA residents.
My wife and I use a Natura Bordolay in firm…each of being in the 225 lb range, to which we add a soft latex mattress topper for the surface comfort we want.
