Bulging and Herniated Discs, Simmons Beautyrest or Natura Greenspring Mattress.

Gerry writesher

Dear Peter,
I have followed your website for some time and have always appreciated your willingness to share your expertise to problem and prospective mattress users.  In my opinion, you provide a great service to the marketplace.  In that regard I decided to write for some possible advice to help my wife and I replace our current bed and mattress configuration.
Both my wife and I have lower back issues.  We currently both awake from sleeping with back pain and me with numbness and pain.  I am 5’6”, 160 lbs., my wife 5’2 125 lbs.  I have bulging discs at L3-4 and bulging and herniation of discs at L4-5.  I had these at the time of original purchase of the Tempurpedic.  My wife eventually had a fusion at L4-5 approximately a year and a half ago due to lingering auto accident injury back damage.
My wife and I are both side sleepers and have been sleeping for approximately 10 years on a kludged together CA King original Tempurpedic mattress with a 3” medium density synthetic latex mattress topper added later, all on the original Tempurpedic  twin box platform base.  We went to that configuration because I couldn’t believe how hard and uncomfortable the original Tempurpedic turned out to be.  I was going numb at the elbows and other pressure points sleeping on the Tempurpedic base mattress alone.  The latex topper helped with top layer comfort but we still wind up in pain after sleeping.  We tried moving the mattress around but over time the Tempurpedic base has became a wreck with the foam layers shifting and with the mattress having  seemingly crowed in the middle.
Following a suggestion you had made to someone else, we flipped the mattress and replace the latex topper.  That was part of the “movement” of the mattress I mentioned in my original message.   Sorry for not making that particular point clearer.  The result was that, indeed, both my wife and I felt immediate better overall support with the regular foam side up.  We used this configuration for a couple of weeks.  The problem became, however, with both of us being side sleepers positioned toward the outer edge, and with the memory foam now being the base layer, it began to crown and would compress otherwise under our body weight to the point where we felt like we were going downhill toward the edge.  So, constant tossing, turning and adjusting ensued.  We eventually flipped the mattress back.
Wondered if you might recommend a better replacement for us than this disaster.
Thanking you in advance for any help or advice you may offer.
Gerry
Hi Gerry,

I have two suggestions for you. You will continue to use your latex topper with either of them for surface comfort and added longevity.
Both are firm, for your disc problems, and both use a pocketed coil, which will take care of the motion transfer.
First, is the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Santorini in extra firm. The other is the Natura Greenspring Liberty in Firm.
Both come with White Glove delivery. The Simmons mattress also includes removal of the old mattress or set.
The Simmons mattress takes approx 2 weeks to get, while the Natura takes approx 3 weeks.
Here are links to each of them.
