Latex topper and mattress still too firm.

Katherine writes:

Pete-

I am following up on the latex topper we ordered to see what you recommend. I am, unfortunately, continuing to have back and shoulder pain and difficulty sleeping. Below is the history of our mattress situation… I am hoping that your expertise can help us out.
* Our old mattress was inherited from parents had reached 25+ years. It was very comfortable for me and my husband to sleep on, but we knew that it was too old and needed replacing.
* I spent a long weekend away at a friend’s house, and slept on a “Beautyrest Legend/Recharge Plush Top”, that was absolute heaven. I have never slept better, and thought this was the mattress to get.
* I was ready to purchase the closest that I could find to it, a “BR Providence World Class Plush” mattress, and then stumbled upon your blog where all plush and pillowtop models are NOT recommended due to clumping or sagging over time. The mattress store (Mattress Firm) insisted that it would hold up, and that their warranty would cover it if it sagged. But the research made me dubious because of how they determine a warranty-worthy “sag” vs. how the customer might define it.
* So, instead I bought a “BR Bridgewater World Class Firm” plus your 2″ soft latex topper.
* I am miserable, however! My back, hips and shoulders hurt every morning, which I have never had before on any mattress (in hotels, on vacation, at friends’ or family). I wake up several times in the night with “pins and needles” at the contact points my body makes with the mattress (shoulders, hips). We need your HELP!

This leads to my concern over whether our latex topper is actually “firm” instead of “soft”. I am 5′ 8″ and 118 lbs, so rather lean and bony. Do I need a plush-top mattress? A totally different mattress? Was I accidentally shipped a firm latex topper from your manufacturer? Do I need a 3″ latex topper? Do I need to add another layer of latex topper? What do you recommend? I want good support, but need much more comfort and “give” in order to sleep well and wake up without pain.

I am nearing the end of the exchange period with the “BR Bridgewater Firm” mattress, so need to decide in the next week what to do. I would greatly appreciate any advice you have and what your opinion is regarding the type of latex topper that we received. I did send you photographs when you requested them… I hope those came through? Please let me know if I need to re-send those.

I know this is a lot of information, but hopefully it will help you understand our situation!
Many thanks,
Katherine
Hi Katherine,

A plush Beautyrest uses a much thinner gauge wire for its coils, which creates a greater depth of softness.
Your body had gotten used to sleeping in an old, worn out mattress, which is why the plush Beautyrest feels so good.
If you exchange your mattress for the plush model, you will be more comfortable….as it is what your body is used to.
However, if you do so, you will need to be prepared to replace that mattress every couple of years…and, you aren’t doing your body any favors by further indulging is with soft support.
When you come off of an old, worn mattress, to a new mattress that provides the firm support you spine needs for long term back health, your body will have to adjust to being properly aligned. The older you are, the longer it takes and the more painful it can be. But, once used to it, the better you will feel.
That said, I’d hate to see you revert back to soft support for the sake of immediate satisfaction…satisfaction that is sure to be short lived.
I would rather see you further soften the surface of what you have and leave the firm support alone.
The latex topper is the best first step because it is a long lasting product that requires no maintenance…you simply set it and forget it. And, for most, it’s all that’s needed.
If additional surface softness is required, as for cases of severe Fibromyalgia, or, as in your case, where surface sensitivity is an issue due to you not having enough of your own natural padding, a supplement to the latex topper works well…specifically, a feather topper. The feather toppers aren’t initially recommended because they do require a good shaking to keep them fluffy.
Here is a link to our feather bed toppers. This is the direction in which I’d have you go, rather than go for soft support.
