Best mattress for degenerative disc disease.

Antariksh writes:

Hi Sir,
I am 27 yrs old. Ht 172cm and wt 98kgs

I am suffering from multi level lumbosacral disc degenerative disease.

My lower spine is compressed from L2 to S1 at each level. I feel numbness and tingling sensation in my legs while walking and also I wake up with severe back pain daily.

Kindly guide me with the most suitable mattress to help me have a sound sleep. Thanks.
Looking fwd for early reply.

Regards, Antariksh

Hi Antariksha,
Since you quoted your size with metric weights and measures, can I correctly assume that you do not live in the US?
Recommending something specific for you is not likely to be information that is of any value to you.
The mattresses made in the US are not available for delivery outside the US…unless you have a shipper who will send it to you.
Mattresses made outside the US are going to be very different.

However, I can give you some direction on what to look for.
Your back problems are unique for someone so young. And I can tell you from experience, that age will not be a factor in your condition improving.
In fact, quite the opposite is true.
In order for your back to worsen slowly instead of quickly, it will be important to have the right support and comfort.
Look for a mattress that is very firm…one with an interlocked innerspring unit,…and not one where the coils are individually pocketed.
Also, you need to make sure that this firm mattress has NO Memory Foam in it…(AKA Visco or visco-elastic foam).
Add to that mattress a 2″ soft Dunlop or Talalay Latex mattress topper.
Latex is the best upholstery material available…extremely comfortable and will not lose its shape, as memory foam will.

If I am correct about not being able to service you directly, I can still assist you in making a selection of the mattresses that you can buy.

So, feel free to email me the specifications of any mattress you’re considering. I will be happy to review them for you.

Oh,Yeah…you got it right Pete. I am from India.

I have gone to a number of dealers and tried a large number of mattresses and have finally honed in on one that I like.

Kindly let me know if this one is well suited for my condition.

Well, Antariksha, I don’t see anything objectionable.

If it feels firm, it should be fine.

Basically you mean to say that i should go for a hard surfaced mattress instead of a soft top. Isnt it. That would help keep my body posture straight and thus the spine will remain in its actual posture. Am i right?

No, Antariksha . That soft layer is thin and will help you sleep more deeply.

The core section needs to be firm.

Ok great. Understood. Thanks a ton for sparing your time and for your kind guidance. I got it now.

The Spring air would be well suited for my type. Will go for that. Thanks once again, Pete. Pleasure interacting with you.

Regards, Antariksha

You’re welcome, Antariksha

Sleep well. Feel better.
Thanks, Pete
