I am on the hunt for a new mattress. My daughter and I share a room so I am investing in a twin over full bunk bed
and I have her bed picked out.
I am getting her a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. Her friend has one and loves it.
But, for myself, I am not sure what to get I will be having a spinal fusion at the S1-L5 disc, basically the first true disc above your pelvic bone.
I also have degenerative disc disease in my lower lumbar.
What mattress would work the best so that I do not have to sleep in a recliner until I am healed enough to lay flat?
Has your doctor recommended a recliner to you for your convalescence?
Yes Pete. I will be in a recliner for a bit, I had a previous back surgery in which I was in a recliner but I am still concerned about when I can finally lay flat.
I had been used to sleeping on a firm bed now with a 1 in. memory foam top and I have a hard time getting comfortable because even with the back issues I tend to be most comfortable laying on my stomach.
Ok. Good. I thought you were trying to circumvent medical advice.
Will the stomach position be your preferred position?
Also, I need to know your height and weight.
Yes that is my preferred position and my current height is 5'6" and I weigh about 213.
The key to sleeping without pain is firm support.
How you go about getting that will vary from person to person, depending on size, shape and sleeping position.
A stomach sleeper requires a mattress that is firmer than that needed by a side sleeper.
Your body has an arch in the small of your back...and, you'll need to maintain that arch.
As a stomach sleeper, the mattress needs to be firm. If soft, the heaviest part of your body will sink and exaggerate the arch, which will cause pain.
Body weight determines how strong the mattress needs to be. Beds are designed to wear quickly, making them more disposable.
So, you have to compensate for this. As a person with a back problem, you will be more sensitive to the way a mattress wears.
You could easily find a mattress that is initially comfortable, only to have it no longer be so in a matter of months.
A complicating factor is surface comfort, which you must have it to sleep deeply.
Poly and memory foams are comfortable, but collapse easily...which will throw off your body's natural alignment. These are the common foams used.
The most resilient is latex. But, you won't find an innerspring mattress with latex at the surface in stores.
A solution is a firm mattress with a latex topper to soften the surface.
However, we do carry a well made Latex Hybrid from The Wolf Co., (A very old family owned and operated manufacturer, operating out of the Midwest since 1872).
The model that will give you the greatest degree of support and comfort...appropriate for your size, sleeping position and condition, is the Adrian model.
This mattress uses a strong coil unit and is already upholstered with all natural latex...eliminating the need for a separate latex topper.
Here is a link to that mattress...providing support and comfort that will last for many years.
