Greetings,I've just read through your blog for heavy people and found it very, very informative.
We have a Stearns & Foster pillowtop mattress that we forced to "last" 13 years (it's needed replacing for at least the last 5.)
The reason we've waited so long? Buying a mattress is a total pain in the ...
Today there are so many options and prices go up to astronomical levels... it's just ridiculous.
And now to find our unicorn...
I am overweight (ok, obese) I'm 5'5" and almost 300; my husband is 5'7" and weighs 150.
Is it possible to find a king size mattress that will work for both of us, without moving to the dreaded two twin bed option?
Needless to say my husband likes plush (and with his skinny-butt almost anything will work) but my back just can't handle the lack of support.
Next, my husband is a total skeptic. The whole "comfort" guarantee appeals to the "brainwashed" side of him.So if we buy online, I'll be the one who needs to convince him that it's a good idea (i.e. it becomes by butt on the line...)
I think the whole notion that buying a mattress from a place that offers a comfort guarantee (and that it might be equivalent of buying someone else's returned mattress) might work...
And now for what I like... I've slept in some amazing inner-spring mattresses at hotels around the US (but they were likely brand new or cost $10K.) I also like the "concept" of memory foam's molding to your body. This makes me think either 100% latex or latex hybrid..?
But I've never bought anything besides innerspring mattresses... so naturally new things can be unnerving. I just need guidance.
I'm mostly concerned about finding something that will support my weight, and not be so hard that my husband complains about how horrible the bed is. Based on this, do we really need to move to two separate mattresses? I really don't want to go this route unless it's totally unavoidable.
Thank you in advance for your feedback and I look forward to hearing from you.Best wishes,Tracey
Most of today's mattresses, especially the name brands, won't hold you for more than a couple of years.
The reason is all the memory foam.
Stearns & Foster had been the Caddilac of the industry, until they were purchased by Tempurpedic, in 2013. Now, all their mattresses are loaded with memory foam.
Going after a comfort exchange, locks you in to that store and what they have to offer.
Most stores are a sea of mattresses containing memory foam.
It's the hook they need to sell that junk.
And, quite frankly, it amounts to nothing more than a sucker's bet.
Hotels, generally, spend little on mattresses...opting, instead, to replace them every few years.
Hotel room are filled every night and may see use 3-4 times a week.
What it required, for you, are high quality components that will provide you with support, comfort and longevity.
So, let's start with the foundation.
We carry a product that takes the place of your frame and boxspring.
The "Forever Foundation" never needs to be replaced and comes with a lifetime guarantee.
There are several choices...shown here:
Next, is the comfort layer.
Latex is and has always been the best, most comfortable and most resilient upholstery material available. And, it's all natural. (Memory foam, on the other hand, off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made)
For you, I recommend the Ever Eden 3" Soft Vytex Dunlop Latex Mattress Topper.
Vytex Dunlop Latex Topper
These two products are the most durable of their kind and will perform well under your size.
The mattress also needs to be strong. This is what provides the support.
For the sake of your spine, I recommend an interlocked innerspring, which will be the strongest available. Fortunately, they aren't expensive.
Wolf is a very old family owned and operated company from the Mid-West, est. 1872.
They make an old fashioned two sided mattress using the strongest coil unit and containing no memory foam....just high density poly foam, like was used in your S&F mattress.
Since the latex topper will provide long lasting surface comfort, I suggest going with their firm model for enduring support....The Tulah in firm.
These three high quality components are your best bet for a sleep system that will support you well and provide comfort that lasts.
