A Google search led me to your site. I’m a 44 yo woman, 5′ tall, 100-105 lbs range, who has had 2 thoracic spinal fusions. (Scoliosis resulted from radiation for a thoracic neuroblastoma at age 6 weeks.)
For at least a decade I have had low back pain on the right, in the lumbar area just over and probably including the SI joint.
I’m a side sleeper; I usually fall asleep on my left side, then wake with right-sided low back pain and roll over to my right side in an attempt to alleviate it
I find I can’t sleep more than about 4-5 hours continuously, and after that point I wake up frequently with pain. It’s bad. My doctors are aware, and I intermittently go back for physical therapy.
About 6 years ago, we bought a “firm” mattress that felt good in the store during a 20 min test drive, but my pain never really improved, and after a few months we hated the mattress.
Now we detest it, and my back pain is worse.
I’ve been reading a lot about innersprings, memory foam, and latex. Unfortunately, like many patients who have had multiple surgeries, I am allergic to latex, so I can’t have any latex-containing product in any of my bedding, not on the top and not sewn into the interior of the mattress, either.
My husband is 5’9, 170 lbs and thinks he sleeps on his side, though sometimes when I wake up I also see him sleeping on his stomach.
Do you have any suggestions about mattress firmness or type of coil architecture for me? (open coil vs continuous coil vs offset coil)
We can afford whatever we need, though it is not in our worldview to spend more than about $2K-$3K for a mattress, and if we spend that much the mattress had better sing us a lullaby and count our sheep for us!
Protein is the allergen that natural exists in latex. For many latex products, (like gloves and bandages), the protein remains. In latex foam, the protein is removed. Latex foam is hypo-allergenic.
As long as you are so willing to dismiss this one true saving grace, you will continue to have a hard time getting comfortable.
The other foams, polyurethane and memory foam are chemical laden products, while latex is all natural. Both poly and memory foam, don’t keep their shape very well.
They aren’t resilient, like latex is….nor as comfortable…nor as able to relieve pressure points.
What this means is, any mattress you buy that feels comfortable initially, will become uncomfortable for you quickly.
The key to minimizing your pain is in maintaining the natural alignment of your spine. A Simmons Beautyrest World Class Santorini in Luxury Firm will accomplish this…as far as support.
The surface comfort and pressure point relief is best had with a Latex topper. The EverEden All Natural 2″ Soft Vytex Dunlop is virtually Allergen Free.
It comes complete with a cover and you WILL NOT react to it.
In fact, the latex topper may be all you need, as it does a great job of making a hard mattress comfortable.
You might consider buying the Latex Topper first. If after you have it, if you still feel the need for a more pliable mattress, the topper will play the same role on your new mattress.
A luxury firm Beautyrest will be less firm than the one you have, but still likely to be too firm for you to sleep deeply…something the topper provides.
Here are links to the mattress and topper.
