We need an all natural mattress with good support and soft feel.

I’ve read much of your website and have a question. I’m shopping for a new bed in my home, plus a queen size in the guest bedroom of my son’s house.

I’d prefer not to spend as much on the son’s guest bed because we won’t sleep there that often, but the mattress for my husband and I at home needs to be good.

Last year I was diagnosed with “central nervous system sensitization” which now may have resulted in fibromyalgia.

I also have neck and low back pain. I am 5 ft. 10 inches and weigh (now) about 210. My husband is 5 ft. 8 inches and weighs about 165.

He has complained, for years, that the Tempurpedic mattress we bought about 14 years ago has always made his hips hurt — and he’s in good shape!

He thought it was too hard. Eventually I did, too. So I bought a 2 inch latex topper and that helped.

But now, it doesn’t seem to offer the support for back an neck (on top of the tempurpedic) and seems too soft and makes my mid back hurt.

My husband says it is still not right for him and his hips still hurt.

He is a pilot and sleeps in hotel beds all over the country. He said he always sleeps better in those beds than the one we have at home!

In my research I discovered that all new mattresses have about 60 different chemicals in them due to California fire retardant standards.

These mattresses are making people sick. I don’t want chemicals in my mattress. The chemicals get in the room and stay there due to off gassing.

So, your suggestion of a Beautyrest with a latex topper still doesn’t take care of the chemical problem.

Knowing the facts above, what mattresses would you have us consider for us at home (king size) knowing we want all natural, no chemicals.

And my husband doesn’t like firm and I need a soft feel, pressure relieving component due to the sensitization issue and I also need good back support.

Then, what would you suggest for a lesser priced option in our son’s guest bedroom?

My “fibro” pain is worse at night as the night goes on and I’m always in pain during the early morning hours. I was getting better with this, but recently it seems to have worsened again.

Hi Deborah,

Your facts are a bit askew. There is an incredible amount of bad information to be had, and you seem to have stumbled upon some of it.

Those 60 some chemicals, to which you refer, have nothing to do with California’s flame retardant laws, which were later adopted nationally.

For the most part, a kevlar type of material is used as a flame retardant, and is perfectly safe until exposed to flame. Only then, will it off gas the chemicals from which it’s made.

Those 60 some chemicals are combined to make memory foam…the junk upholstery that is in your Tempurpedic mattress.

Most memory foam will off gas those chemicals right from the beginning and without provocation.

Some memory foam, like the kind used it the Simmons Beautyrest, do not off gas…which the only reason some of their models are still on our website.

And then, there’s plant based memory foam, which also does not off gas.

All memory foam is temperature sensitive…softening as it warms from your body heat.

After a while, the memory foam loses the little resiliency it has…allowing you to sink through it to the firmer poly foam under it….which is why your husband’s hip hurt.

When we recommend a Simmons Beautyrest, we also recommend a latex topper to go with it…to prevent the kind of pain you are both experiencing.

We often get Tempurpedic customers with your problems, to whom we recommend adding a latex topper…but, not the way you did it.

The memory foam on top of the mattress is worthless. Before adding a latex topper, it’s important to flip your mattress over.

Doing this will provide your body with the firm support offered by the poly foam. The memory foam will be on the down side and no longer a problem.

The latex topper will then provide the surface comfort.

You might try that before doing anything else. For many, it’s all that needs to be done.

Between the firm support of the poly foam and the softness of the latex topper, you may find that you do not need a new mattress…just yet.

If you do, the one I suggest is made by Natura of Canada. Their Greenspring line is chemical free. Even the flame retardant is natural wool.
