How Do I deal with a Toxic Sealy Posturepedic Mattress?

Hi Pete,
I recently purchased a Sealy Posturepedic mattress from Macy’s. 
When it arrived, the delivery team removed the plastic and there was a potent nauseating synthetic smell. 
The smell was so strong that we had to open our windows for a few days in attempt to air it out.
 
We slept on the bed, and our hair began to smell like it and I developed headaches and a progressive cough. 
I went to the doctor, thinking I had an infection and at the time, not linking it to my mattress. 
My cough has developed into pulmonary issues and I’m currently undergoing testing for an airway disease.
 
After researching the chemicals in new mattress further, I believe that this smell and the toxins released are directly related to my health issues.
The problem is, the mattress was purchased at the end of September and the “return period” has passed.
 
The fumes were so bad that one of our children who slept in the bed just a few times also has a cough and is going to be tested now.
I feel overwhelmed on where to start. Should I call Macy’s first and report this? Or contact Sealy?
 
This issue has negatively affected the quality of my life, so much, that I could need ongoing health care. 
Our home still smells like the chemicals and we can’t sleep in the bed, at all. 
Even being in the bedroom for too long, brings on nausea.
 
I saw some of your helpful responses in an online forum and am hoping you might have some advice for me.

Hi Jess,
You must get rid of that mattress as quickly as possible.
Macy’s customer service is, usually, very good.
Call them. Tell them your story and insist upon them picking up the mattress and issuing a full refund.
Let me know how that goes.
You must buy a mattress without any memory foam in it.
I doubt that Macy’s has any.

Hi Peter,
Sorry to bother you.
I contacted Macy’s, and they have said that it is not considered a manufacturing defect and they will not pickup my mattress without a fee. 
They said it is a customer preference and everyone responds differently to the toxic off gassing and that they will not allow me to return it. 
They will only even exchange. 
I do not want the product in my home at all.
Any more advice?

No bother, at all.
The next thing, is to get a hold of Sealy…both, their corporate headquarters and the plant where your mattress was made.

Contact Us. We want to make sure you get the best night’s sleep on a Sealy mattress. If you still have questions, feel free to email or call us.

The information for the Sealy plant that made your mattress is on the label that is sewn into one of the seams at the head of the mattress.

Frankly, I don’t know how you will make out with Sealy.
So, they aren’t your only avenue. If you get nowhere with Sealy, it’ll be time to get tough with Sealy and Macy’s.
I’ve learned that only way for an unhappy consumer to get satisfaction, is to make the offending parties unhappy too.
Here’s who to call if Sealy isn’t willing to help:
1) A local TV News station that has a consumer advocate.
2) The Better Business Bureau
3) Your state’s Attorney General’s Office
4) Your state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
