Mattress, Bed Base and Pillow for Sleep Apnea, Arthritis, Hip Neck and Back Pain.

Keith writes:
Hi Pete,
I am wondering what mattresses would be the best choice for us.
I am a 31, 6’0, 180 lbs and my wife is 5’7, 135 lbs.
I was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis with pain in my neck, back, and hips.
I have bulging disks in my L5 and S1.
I was also diagnosed with sleep apnea this last year and will be using a C-pap machine.
I have been reading as much as I can on your blog.
I went into a furniture store to lay on some mattresses.
I am still confused as to which type to buy.
I know I need a firm mattress with a topper on it, but there are still so many to choose from. What are the main differences in the firm mattresses?
Are they all basically the same?
Thank you for your time. Keith
Hi Keith,
You have a number of issues, and all of them need to be addressed, if you are to enjoy a good night’s sleep.
The quality of the components will determine if you are to get that good night’s sleep…
night after night, and for many years.
It’s easy to pick out a mattress that feels good. Today’s challenge is in finding one that will remain comfortable and supportive for more than a few months.
Memory foam is the component that causes mattresses to need frequent replacing.
It’s memory foam that you will need to avoid, in order to make a successful long term purchase.
The key to all this is firm, yet natural alignment of the spine and a surface that is soft and comfortable that will not negate the underlying support…using components that make all this remain like new for many years.
In most stores, achieving this is impossible…as it is a sea on mattresses upholstered with memory foam…Thee thing you need to avoid.
An individually pocketed coil unit will contour to the shape of your body, and maintain the natural alignment of your spine. The push back support of the coils will help keep your discs in place….and not fight the arthritis.
A high coil count and strong coils are a must.
Surface comfort is best achieve with soft latex….very comfortable and equally resilient.
Latex will not allow you to sink, as memory foam does.
You feel comfort, and yet, are buoyed by latex.
The feel of latex, is one of floating.
For the mattress, I recommend The Natura of Canada Greenspring Plush EuroTop.
Shown here:
Greenspring Liberty Plush Euro Top. Experience deeper, more restorative sleep with the Liberty Plush Euro Mattress. Lush helpings of natural ingredients come together …
This mattress features:
Individually pocketed coils.
A very high coil count.
Double tempered steel coils for extra resiliency.
Latex upholstery and NO Memory Foam.
The Plush EuroTop is likely to be comfortable enough, that the separate purchase of a latex topper will not be necessary.
And now for the Sleep Apnea.
The cpap machine is uncomfortable.
You’ll be tempted to consider an adjustable bed base.
And while they help with your breathing, will throw off the alignment of your spine.
If you are considering an adjustable bed base, in lieu of using the cpap machine, then you want one with a “Tilt Feature”….which tilts while remaining flat.
Such an adjustable base will solve you breathing problem and maintain the proper support for you back.

Warranty Sleep Enhancement Technology™ The benefits of the Sleep Enhancement technology are numerous. The pulsation of a single vibe motor placed in the mid-back …
Lastly, your neck pain can be easily relieved with the proper pillow.
A latex pillow made of finely chopped latex, allows you to mold the mattress around the the head and neck any way you like…providing excellent support and comfort.
And, as with other latex products, they last for many years.
Here is a link to the PureBliss Latex/Down Pillow…the one i use at home, to relieve the arthritis pain in my neck.
Natural Talalay LatexDown Pillows … 100% Finely chopped latex, providing the comfort and conformity of a down pillow, with the durability of latex.

I suggest using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will greatly extend the life and loft of the upholstery materials inside. Ours sleep cool and make NO Noise.
