What Do I Do About a Serta Talalay Latex Mattress That Has Failed Me?

Tena writes:
Hello Pete,
I have a dilemma and I don’t know what to do. I was hoping you could help me out.

I am a 57 yr old divorced female.  I’m 5’2, 240 lbs. I have a herniated disk and arthritis in my back.
I needed a new bed that would help with pressure point relief. I researched for a long time on what was the best mattress to get.
I came to the conclusion that natural Latex was the way to go. I wished I would have seen your website before now.
I don’t know how I missed it with all the searching I did.

In June of 2017,  I went to a Latex mattress dealer near me and explained what I needed.
I was sold on a Queen Serta Euro Top Talalay mattress.
From the top down:
Alternative down quilting,
3″ 14 ILD Talalay latex,
1″ 22 ILD Talalay latex
The rest is Serta’s Eco-friendly soy based support foam. It has a 20yr. warranty. I bought a box spring also.
I was under the impression from the way it was explained, that the Talalay was all natural and springy, (unlike memory foam which, I despise).
It even says so on their web page.
It was great at first, but within just a few months, after the 30 day “you can bring it back” slogan was up, it started sinking in the middle.
It became uncomfortable and non supportive. I felt like I was crawling out of a hole just to get out of bed.
Plus, they said I have to rotate it every month which I am doing, but its a pain in the you know what.
Of course, if it was the best bed of my life, I’d have a better attitude about rotating it.
As it is, it really doesn’t make much sense, since I sleep in the middle….where it sags.
Oh, and yes, I have tried to sleep on the sides to even it out but that too is a pain in the you know what.
I don’t feel I should have to do that, especially with a brand new bed.  I’m very frustrated.
I just put up with it because it hadn’t sunk to the depth that the warranty would help me.
I called the dealer and they weren’t very helpful.
I called Serta and asked if it was all natural Talalay or synthetic and they said it wasn’t all natural Talalay. It is both, Talalay and polyurethane mixed.
I feel very deceived.  Even so, I don’t know if that has anything to do with me sinking in the middle because its part synthetic.
Regardless, its not working for me. I feel maybe the latex thing just wasn’t for me.
It’s been almost a year since I bought this mattress and I’m just not happy especially with the cost of it too.
So, I ordered a “My Pillow” 3″ mattress topper since I do have their pillow, which I love. So, I thought it was worth a try.
Well, its already starting to sink in the middle after only a month. I’m right back to crawling out of a hole to get out of bed.
Now I don’t know what to do. My 60 day refund return on the topper is almost up (May 11th to be exact).
Should I keep it and deal with it or do something else but what? Try to sell the mattress and start over?
I don’t have a lot of money to throw around on this and would I even be able to resell it?
Return the mattress topper fast and just deal with the mattress?
Keep it all and except I made a mistake and deal with it till something else comes along in the future?

That’s when I came across your blog and website and thought maybe you could give me some advise on what would be best for me to do.
Do you have any suggestions on what would work for me?  I am desperate to be comfortable.
I know losing weight would be the best thing to do obviously, and truly, I am working on that alllllll the time but right now it is what it is.
If you could guide me into the right direction and give me some insight I would surly be grateful forever.
Thank you, Tena

Hi Tena,

The first thing to do, is to return the topper for a refund while you still can. It’s a useless product.

I’m afraid you’ll have to start over.

Your conclusion that an all latex mattress is best, was incorrect to start with.

Then, you bought an inferior quality products, to boot.

You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear and there’s no point in throwing good money after bad.

Get rid of the mattress and keep the foundation.

If you donate the mattress, you can write off the entire purchase price from your taxes.

If you sell it, you’ll get little for it.

While an all natural, all latex mattress is the best of the foams, an all foam mattress is the wrong choice to support a herniated disc.

You will need an innerspring to properly support a back with disc damage.

You can read all about that here:

The absolute worst material for a bad back and the pain associated with it, is Memory Foam.. Memory foam is a highly deceptive product…felling one way on the showroom floor and feeling quite a bit differently at home.

You can’t fool around with half measures. Your body weight dictates that you have a quality mattress. My wife and I are, both, over 200 pounds. We have home tested many mattresses, over the years.

The one we have now, is the best we’ve found.

Made by Natura of Canada, their Greenspring line uses a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil unit.

The coils all move independently from one another….contouring to the shape of your body and maintaining the natural alignment of your spine.

The steel, from which the coils are made, is double tempered for strength.

The coil count is very high…higher than any Simmons Beautyrest.

The upholstery is Natural Talalay Latex.

“Natural” Talalay Latex is a bit of a euphemism. It’s a blend of natural and synthetic latex.

Synthetic latex is a molecular clone of natural latex and is also very high quality.

Synthetic latex is used to ensure and consistent result.

ALL Natural Latex, because it is all natural, will vary a bit with each batch made…and from year to year, depending on growing conditions.

The problem with your mattress, is the poly foam core…not the blended latex.

Because the components of the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses are so high, they all feel firmer than they sound.

The most comfortable of the 5 models is the Plush Eurotop…shown here:

ALSO IMPORTANT:
I suggest using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will greatly extend the life and loft of the upholstery materials inside. Ours sleep cool and make NO Noise.
