Rotating a Simmons Comforpedic Mattress.

David writes:

Hi Pete,

So why didn’t I read this blog YEARS ago?!  We’ve only rotated our King Size Simmons Comforpedic 180 when we do it.

Now, we’ve got the bulge in the middle, and it feels like the support just isn’t there anymore.

While looking at new mattresses yesterday, one of the stores recommended trying the 90 degree turn.

They said that the bulge is not a defect in the mattress, but our sleeping habits has caused an uneven break in.

My issue is that we have a bed with sideboards, and I’m concerned that the 1/4 rotation will look bad.

How has that worked out for anyone else with this issue?

Furthermore, I’m 6’3″ and my feet hang over on the occasion I sleep on my back (I’m more frequently on my side).

But if it will extend my mattress life, I’m certainly willing to try!

Thanks, David

Hi David,
First off, this is not a open forum. It’s my blog. Noone but me will respond.
This Typepad blog is my oldest current running blog…going back to 2007.
However, I’ve been blogging since 2003.
This particular subject has been addressed multiple times, over the years.
So, why haven’t you seen this before?…My guess is that you have not looked before now.
Quarter turning a mattress only works with an Eastern King size.
The benefit, it provides, works best when you do so from the start.
Once the body impressions have formed, it’s too late to have the mattress settle evenly.
The downside is that even an Eastern King is not square.
The mattress will hang over the sides a little and will be shorter, for the time it’s 1/4 turned.
From the time the mattress is new, give it a quarter turn once a month for the first year.
(For optimum performance)
Thanks, Pete

Thanks, Peter.

Yes, my comment about not seeing the blog was rhetorical. And I understand the dimension issue (4″ longer than wide).
Nevertheless, I appreciate the comments.
In spite of the fact that it’s been 6 years, we tried sleeping on our mattress sideways last night as an experiment.
We did, in fact, sleep more comfortably. So, we’re going to try the rotation for a while.
Nothing to lose, but could potentially put off the expense if it works out.

Hi David,

If you’re ok with sleeping across the mattress, you don’t need to turn it.
Also, there’s a reasonably low cost solution to making your mattress like new…and more comfortable.
The part that wears easily, is the memory foam on top.
The memory foam is supported by firm, high density polyurethane foam.
The poly foam provides excellent support.
If you were to buy a 2” Soft Vytex Dunlop or Talalay Latex Topper, it would make your mattress like new.
It’ll be more comfortable and way longer lasting than memory foam.
If you get the latex topper, flip the mattress over before adding it.

Interesting option!
While I believe I understand completely, I’d like to confirm that you mean for the mattress to be flipped, thus re-using the the polyfoam portion with a “replaced” top section.
That being the case, I’m concerned that the topper will “slide” and not remain securely in place.
If I have to adjust it each time I change the sheets, I have no interest in it.

Also, not remembering the construction of my mattress, I believe I have multiple layers on top of the polyfoam.
If that’s the case, I don’t know if the topper will provide the same level of comfort.

Hi David,

Those latex toppers come completely finish and with corner straps that wrap around the corners of the mattress…keeping it in place.

As far as comfort is concerned, soft latex is far superior to the foams in your mattress. The comfort is extraordinary.

Thanks, Pete
