Simmons Beautyrest and Tempurpedic Mattresses Sleep Very Hot.

Karen writes:
Hi Pete,

Love your website. I would like your advice regarding my six month, endless quest for the ‘right’ bed.
I am a 62 years old with a ‘bad’ back and an issue with sleeping very, very hot.
I have not had a good sleep in ages, due to waking up frequently at night to roll to a new ‘cool’ spot.
I currently have a Simmons Beautyrest Silver Series Luxury Firm mattress.
Before that, I had a Tempurpedic which I returned due to excessive heat.

On my Simmons, I have tried:
1) sleeping on bare mattress- still too hot
2) adding a lambswool topper- still too hot
3) trying a Stay Cool (brand name) Pad-still too hot!
4) Outlast sheets- did not help at all
5) Bed Fan! and three other fans blowing on me

Currently, I feel like I am sleeping inside an airplane turbine engine.
I can stay cool on top, but within an hour, I am burning my outline into the mattress.
it looks like a crime scene every night!
I still have not tried topping this mattress with a) a featherbed topper or b) a latex topper.

I know I need a medium-firm mattress b/c of my lower back pain.
I do not want a topper to over-soften the situation.
My new Simmons Beautyrest is not returnable or refundable b/c I already returned their Tempurpedic.
The people at my local mattress store, think I’m high maintenance and ‘one of those crazy customers’.
(Well, I’m getting there, trust me:)
So, my long-winded question to you is, would you recommend trying a latex topper?
(Although my bed is soft enough).
Will a latex topper disperse my body heat?
Or, should I start over with an all latex mattress, taking a substantial money ‘hit’?
Unlike my mattress, or my local store, you let me vent!
Thanks for your time and understanding, Karen

P.S. I visited a friend with an old, lousy bed in a hot attic and slept great and did not wake once.
Go figure! Must have been a coil bed?
Hi Karen,
The culprit in all of this is the memory foam upholstery in your mattress and that Tempurpedic, you had.
Your friend’s old mattress doesn’t have any memory foam in it.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive product. It absorbs your body heat and then reflects it back to you.
A latex topper is not temperature sensitive, and will insulate you from the memory foam.
Latex comes in a variety of comfort levels.
While most people want and need a soft one, that does not seem to be a good choice for you.
I recommend the EverEden 100% All Natural, Vytex Dunlop Latex Topper, in Medium.
2″ is all you need to insulate you from the memory foam in your mattress.

Here’s the link for that.
