Back Pain and Sagging from a Stearns and Foster Pillowtop Mattress.

Janie writes:
Hello Peter,

We bought a Stearns and Foster Estate Pillow Top mattress, about 4.5 years ago for $2200.
About 6 months to a year of sleeping on that mattress we started noticing some aches and pains in our backs.
We attributed it to work and other life stresses.
After another year we started to notice some sagging in the mattress.
Also, at this point, my husband was seeing a doctor for his back pain, as it had gotten pretty bad.
It was so bad, that he could barely get out of bed some mornings.
And now, I’m experiencing the same amount of pain in my neck and shoulders.
We are beyond frustrated with our mattress and very overwhelmed with finding a new one.
I went into some stores to test mattresses today and didn’t know what felt good or bad to me.
All I could think of was how my current mattress felt great and then a year later we were in pain.
So, I guess I’m saying is we are ‘gun shy’ to spend a lot of money to find ourselves in this predicament again.
I seriously almost purchased a $700 mattress from Costco b/c of this experience.
I figured it would probably last us just as long for the fraction of the price we paid originally.
We checked the warranty and the indentation that I measured isn’t enough for our warranty to cover.
This is shocking, considering how much pain both of us have been in, and how much we paid.
I am 38 years old, 5’8″, 128 pounds and a side sleeper.
My husband is also 38 years old,  but is 6’2″, about 200 pounds, and mostly sleeps on his back.
We are both pretty fit and healthy.  He tends to like a firmer mattress.
Me? I can sleep on anything…except for our current mattress!
Do you have any advice for us on types of mattresses we should look into that will actually LAST us this time?
Thank you so much.
Janie
Hi Janie,
It’s important for you to understand why your mattress performed the way it did….if for no other reason than to avoid repeating that same mistake.
Over the last 15 years, the mattress industry has gone bad…the name brands, in particular.
The product that is being widely used to create the problem you’re having, is memory foam.
(aka, visco or visco-elastic foam)
This junk material was introduced by Tempurpedic, which now owns Sealy/Stearns & Foster.
Memory foam has created a boon for the mattress industry and a nightmare for the consumer.
Memory foam, unlike all other upholstery materials, is temperature sensitive.
That is to say, it softens as it warms from the body heat. Once warmed, it sinks under your body weight.
When new, the time it takes to do all this is longer than it is after only a few months.
Once you sink into it, your spine is no longer properly aligned.
Your hip then hits the firmer material below it….and all this translates into physical pain.

So, the thing to avoid, is mattresses upholstered with memory foam.

I recommend the mattress we sleep on at home.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring uses a pre-compressed, individually pocketed coil system.
This will keep your spine properly aligned….and your husband from needing to see a doctor.
The Natural Talalay Latex upholstery is not temperature sensitive and is the best upholstery material available.
We have the Ultra Plush model, which is the most comfortable of the 4 models in that line.
Since latex is so resilient, aa 4 models are firmer than they sound by their description.
In other words, the Ultra Plush model is NOT too soft, by anyone’s standards.
Here is a link to that line of mattresses:
These are very long lasting mattresses.
White glove delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.
Delivery includes removal of your old mattress.
VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase longevity.
Use our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.

Thanks, Pete
