A Mattress for Back Pain and Spinal Alignment.

Nancy writes:
Hi Pete,

I am currently seeing a chiropractor, who has recommended a extra firm mattress to maintain spinal alignment.
I have several disc related back problems that cause me pain.
One company makes a mattress specifically for him. It’s a latex mattress and extremely expensive.
Do you have any alternatives in the regular mattress industry?
I am 76 years old, 5′ 7″ and weigh about 145 lbs. My husband is same age, 6′ 1″, 195 lbs.
We are trying to keep the cost down, but are also concerned that we will not sleep well on the extra firm option.
Any suggestions?
Thank youNancy
Hi Nancy,

It irritates me, to no end, when someone in the medical industry gives bad advice concerning mattresses.
It has been my experience that what these people know about mattresses and how they work, will fit in a thimble.
Imagine, recommending an extra firm mattress to an elderly person! Ridiculous!
It’s a good thing you didn’t follow his advice. A mattress that firm will be quite painful for both of you.
What’s more, an all foam mattress doesn’t have any upward, push back support.
A pre-compressed individually pocketed coil innerspring mattress provides the right support.
This type of support is specifically designed to maintain the natural alignment of your spine.
Plush latex upholstery on this type of mattress will also relieve the pressure points at the hip and shoulder.
For disc related back problems, an all latex mattress will only cause pain.
And, an Extra Firm Mattress is most uncomfortable for most people, let alone for someone already suffering with the usual aches and pains that goes along with age.
The mattress I’m recommending for you and your husband will provide the right support, comfort and longevity.
What’s more, it is well made and reasonably priced.
That mattress is The Wolf Pocketed Coil/Latex Hybrid Adara.
