Does Perspiration Damage a mattress?

Georgina writes:

Hi Pete,
Does perspiration damage a mattress?
My husband sweats something awful when he’s sleeping.
I’ve noticed that his side of the mattress has a deeper body impression in it than my side.
I could understand it, if he were a lot bigger than me, but he isn’t.
Is there anything that can be done about this?
Thanks, Georgina
Hi Georgina,
Yes. Perspiration does damage a mattress.
When moisture seeps into the upholstery layers of a mattress, they break down and lose their resiliency.
There are a couple of things that you can do.
The first thing is to avoid mattresses upholstered with memory foam.
Of all the upholstery materials available, memory foam is the only one that is temperature sensitive.
Memory foam absorbs the heat from your body and then reflects that heat back to you.
This causes you to sleep hot and perspire a lot more than you normally would.
To protect the mattress from premature wear due to the moisture from perspiration, use a waterproof mattress protector.
Even then, you have to be careful of which one you buy.
Some have a terrycloth top that also causes the user to sleep hot.
We recommend the “Gotcha Covered” brand.
It’s organic cotton and sleeps cool. We use one at home.
