Back and Hip Pain On a Serta iCloud Hybrid Mattress.

Tony writes:
Hi Pete,

I need some help with purchasing a mattress.
I need to purchase a new mattress because my Serta iComfort Hybrid broke down too early.
Sleeping on it gives me back pain and hip pain.
I understand the back pain but I have never experienced hip pain from a poor mattress before.
Can you explain that to me?
Anyway, I think the memory foam gave out to early and it isn’t bad enough to qualify for the warranty.

I have purchased and returned 3 different mattresses, and this process has taken over 4 months.
And I still haven’t found a decent mattress.
I have purchased a Simmons Beautyrest BR 800 medium that was way too soft.
Then, a Stearns and Foster Medium firm that did this weird pushing up in the lumbar area thing.
And a Beautyrest Silver BR 900 that did the same pushing up of the lumbar area thing.

I have had good luck staying at Comfort Inn hotels – the mattresses seem to work for me.
I just stayed at a Comfort Inn in Roseville CA, a couple of days ago.
The mattress felt good and was a Simmons Beautyrest Recharge, made in San Leandro Ca.
Unfortunately, the San Leandro plant closed down.
Is a Simmons Beautyrest Recharge a good mattress?

I am a side sleeper and I need a firmish mattress.
I don’t want the lumbar pushing up thing, whatever that is, and I don’t want memory foam. It doesn’t last.
I also need to figure out why these mattresses are giving me hip pain.
I think the hip pain started when I started sleeping on the Serta iComfort.

Can you help me with this problem?
Thanks, Tony
Hi Tony,

Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material.
As it warms from your body heat, it softens, allowing you to sink into it.
The heaviest parts of your body sink the furthest….normally, that’s the waist and hip area.
Your hips are now hitting the firmer materials used to support the memory foam.
This is why your hip hurts.
The diabolical thing about memory foam is the way it returns when you get out of bed…so that you never meet the criteria necessary to prevail in a warranty claim.
All the name brands have been sold to investors who are using memory foam to recoup their investment and turn a profit.
All 3 of your mattresses were upholstered with memory foam.
Hotels have long rejected memory foam for their mattresses.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
There was no memory foam in that hotel mattress you slept on.
Those mattresses are not available at any retail store…only through the hotels, for which they charge a pretty penny.
An individually pocketed coil unit, upholstered with polyurethane, latex or both, is what to look for in a mattress.
Here is a link to the Wolf Hybrids. Both provide the same excellent firm support.
The Tulah model is the more comfortable of the two, and by no means is it too soft.

Shipping is free and there’s no sales tax.

We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will extend the life of the mattress.

Thanks, Pete
