Back Pain on a Tempurpedic Mattress.

Augie writes:
Hi Pete,
We bought a Tempurpedic mattress, a few months ago.
At first, is seemed fine, except for sleeping a bit warm.
Now that my exchange period has ended, my back pain has returned.
I feel like I just threw $2000 down the toilet.
I’m 50 years old and only weigh 170 lbs. Yet, I’m now sinking into this pos. Please excuse my French.
What do I do now?
Thanks, Augie
Hi Augie,
There is a fix, but it isn’t ideal and it isn’t permanent.
The problem with your mattress is the memory foam, which they promote as being a quality material.
It is, in fact, the lowest quality material ever invented. It’s designed for profit, not quality and not longevity.
Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.
What that means is, as it warms from your body heat, it softens and you sink into it.
Not so much, at first, but it doesn’t take long for the memory foam to lose the little resiliency it has.
So now, you’re sinking in way to far, which is throwing off your spinal alignment and causing pain.
You, obviously, have some disc related damage to your spine.
The return of your back pain is what makes that obvious to me.
The fix is to flip the mattress over and add a Pure Bliss 2″ Plush Natural Talalay Latex Topper.
Shown here:
The underside of your mattress is not memory foam. It’s high density polyurethane foam.
It is extremely firm. The latex topper is for surface comfort.
If you flip your mattress over now, your back will feel better…even without the latex topper.
While the underside of the mattress and the latex topper are far better materials, it’s not ideal.
Your disc problems will do better on an individually pocketed innerspring mattress that pushes back up against your spine.
This will be much better support for long term spinal alignment.
Here is a link to mattresses that provide that type of support, that have no memory foam in them.
As you’ll see, these mattresses are not much more expensive than the latex toppers.

With either choice, delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.
We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will extend the life of the mattress.

Thanks, Pete
