Shopping for a Mattress Before Going Store to Store.

Carrie writes:
Hi Pete,
I was online looking for recommendations and stumbled on to your website.

We are finally mattress “shopping” but before I start going store to store, I figured I would ask you for some guidance.

Currently, we have a California King Stearns & Foster pillow top I think that my husband had before we were married.
I would guess in total it is about 15-16 yrs., maybe.
Both sides of the bed you can see the “sagging” where we have laid.
It has been rotated and flipped so many times.

I was going to stick with what we know and get another Stearns & Foster, but I did see your posts indicating that they are not what they used to be.
We are skeptical to purchase a mattress online thinking we have to try it in person or see it but I am guessing most of your recommendations are online.

Background information:
6’0 – 260lbs (husband) – My husband had back surgery (double laminectomy) in 2007.
5’4 – 155lbs (me)

We both suffer back pain, body, neck (my spine is reversed curvature and leg issues (possible from sciatica/IT).
We do sit most of the day in the office.
We used to work out 6x a week, many years ago.
There’s been no daily exercises, except overworking for the last 3 years, which we plan to change. LOL.

Thanks for your help, Carrie

Hi Carrie,

It seems you are bound and determined to make a painful mistake…physically and financially painful.
I’d wish you luck, but you’ll need more than that.
You’ll need a miracle.
My advice would be to avoid any mattress upholstered with memory foam.
But since you’re sticking with S&F, which is now owned by Tempurpedic, following that advice won’t be possible.
Most of the people who buy from me have learned their lesson the hard way.
It seems that you are on that same path.

We will do business together at a later date. I’ll see you then.

Thanks, Pete
You mean in regards to Stearns & Foster and a new one?
Yes, I was going to until I googled more and came across your website indicating they are owned by Tempurpedic and lots of memory foam which is not good for bad backs which I then began to question getting a Stearns & Foster.

I have always been skeptical purchasing mattresses online.
However, if it means getting a sound/quality mattress and works for us I am fine with that.
It is me having to get out of the old mindset of needing to see it in person.

In any event, what mattresses do you recommend? (even online)
What happens if we purchase a mattress online and there is no relief just the same or worse?
I have read that some companies offer some sort of 30-90 day guarantee.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations and sorry for the confusion in the email previously sent.
Sincerely, Carrie
Hi Carrie,

Comfort guarantees came with memory foam.
It’s the kind of hook one needs to give a customer that warm fuzzy feeling while selling them a crappy product.
Most manufacturers don’t participate in this scam.
When you deal with a retailer who offers that, you could easily end up with a mattress that someone else has used and returned, since it can’t be returned to the manufacturer for that reason.
As illegal as that is, it happens all the time, since no one is policing this industry.
We sell only high quality products, without memory foam.
There’s no need nor desire for us to participate in that scam.
The mattress I’d recommend for you is the same mattress my wife and I sleep on at home. We are, each, over 200 lbs. and despite our weights, our mattress remains in like new condition after 5 years.
I have hit the trifecta of back problems…herniated and bulging discs, and degenerative disc disease…diagnosed 18 years ago.
Despite all that, I sleep and wake without back pain.
We’ve sold tons of these mattresses, over the years, and without complaints.
That mattress is the Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush.
Shown here:

This mattress comes with white glove delivery, which includes set up in your bedroom and removal of your set.
Delivery is free and there’s no sales tax.
Oh yes- that makes sense regarding the “guarantee”.
Yikes, I didn’t think of possibly getting someone else’s returned mattress.

I will take a look at our foundation.
We have a piece of plywood that my husband’s doctor recommended, long ago, to put between the foundation and mattress itself.
Anything to look for on the foundation to see if we need to replace that too?
Is this mattress designated as “firm” or do they not have the different distinctions?

Thanks again, Carrie
Hi Carrie,

The price difference between the mattress only price and the set price is small.
Given the box spring you have and your husband’s size, replacing that foundation is the prudent thing to do.

In buying just the mattress, under these circumstances, you save little and risk much.

There are four choices of comfort in that line, with the Ultra Plush providing the greatest degree of surface comfort.

Due to the high quality of the components, they are all firmer than their comfort designations make them sound.
All have the same firm support from the same firm coil unit.
This is how they feel:
Firm = Very much like the floor
Luxury Firm = Firm
Plush = Luxury Firm
Ultra Plush = Plush
Keep in mind that you can always soften the surface of a too firm mattress, but can’t easily firm up one that is too soft.
If your choice leaves you wishing it were softer, that can be easily accompanied by adding a Soft Talalay Latex Topper.
The topper is also, extremely high quality…more resilient than any other type of upholstery material.

We recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with every mattress.
Keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry will extend the life of the mattress.

Thanks, Pete
