Memory Foam Mattress Topper Made My Back Hurt More.

Alex writes:
Hello Pete,

I’ve been reading your blog to try to figure out the best mattress to purchase.
I figured just asking you might be the best option since you seem the most straightforward and honest person on mattresses I’ve seen so far.

Right now, I am sleeping on a cheap generic mattress.
I like firm mattresses but it’s as stiff as a board with absolutely no give. I might as well be sleeping on the floor.
I tried remedying this with a 4″ memory foam mattress topper.
After reading your blog I now realize why this didn’t help at all. In fact, it made my back hurt more.

I am a female, 220 lbs, 5’6″, and very curvy. I’m mostly a side sleeper with some back sleep.
I have problems with my hips, lower back, and shoulders.
I use a pillow between my legs per my chiropractor’s recommendations to help align my spine.
I also have family history of deteriorating disc disease. So, support is very important to me.

My partner is only 111 lbs., and even she wakes up stiff after only one night’s sleep in my current bed situation.

My parents have a King Stearns & Foster Camdenhurst Luxury Firm. Have for years.
I sleep completely peacefully on that bed.

I was wondering what you recommend buying to gain a similar feel? My budget isn’t necessarily restricted.
I have a daytime sleeping disorder that makes a good night‘s sleep very important.
I just want to make sure I get the best mattress possible for me.
I want to be able to sleep well and support my body so I don’t wake up so stiff and sore anymore.

Please, any advice and/or recommendations are appreciated.

Alex

Hi Alex,

Your original thought of softening the mattress you have was a good one.
You just needed a tool that actually works.
Memory foam is worthless for that application.
I recommend a Suite Sleep 3” Soft Organic Latex Topper for that job.
Shown here:
This is a good 1st step. And maybe, the only step.
If you actually do need a new mattress, you’ll want to use that same topper on it.
The Camdenhurst was the starting model in the S&F line.
We had been a Sealy/S&F dealer for many years.
When Tempurpedic bought those companies in 2013, we stopped selling them.
Nothing with a S&F label has been worth buying since then…all memory foam upholstery.
We found the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses as a good high quality replacement for S&F.
The specifications of these mattresses exceed the specifications of the older S&Fs.
If the topper, alone, doesn’t work for you and you do need a new mattress, one of the Natura of Canada Greenspring mattresses will.
My wife and I sleep on the ultra plush model at home.
Each of us exceeds 200 lbs., and I have a very bad back.
Our mattress is still in like new condition after more than 5.5 years.
What’s more, I sleep and wake without back pain.
Here is a link to that line of mattresses:
Everything we sell is delivered free and there’s no sales tax.
Thanks, Pete

VERY IMPORTANT:
Keeping your mattress clean and dry will increase its longevity.
We recommend our Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector.
