I bought a memory foam mattress for fibromyalgia.

Michelle writes:
Hi Pete,

I have fibromyalgia. At the advice of a salesman, I bought a memory foam mattress.
I’ve had this mattress for a couple of years.
At first, it seemed to help my fibro, but not anymore.
Lately, I’ve been experiencing numbness in my hands.
Does the mattress have anything to do with this?
If so, what can I do about it?
Thanks, Michelle
Hi Michelle,
I’m sorry to be the one to tell you that your choice of mattress is responsible for the numbness in your hands.
Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material.
It softens as it warms from your body heat. When new, that feels good.
But memory foam is a poor-quality material, losing its resiliency much too quickly.
What’s happening, now, is your torso is sinking in too far.
Your arms aren’t as heavy as your torso, so they aren’t sinking in.
Your torso is down and your arms are up…cutting off the circulation to your extremities.
This is what’s causing your hands to go numb.
This is a common complaint….just one of many different types of complaints associated with memory foam.
The key to a successful mattress purchase is in avoiding any mattress made with memory foam.
As you can see, it didn’t take long before it no longer helped your fibromyalgia.
Avoiding memory foam is not as easy as it sounds.
All of the name brands have been sold. All of those brands and many other brands use memory foam.
The purpose of memory foam is to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
Here you are, needing a new mattress after only a couple of years.
Once trusted name brands, are now all about profit and not at all about quality…as they had been, years ago.
The first thing to do, is flip that mattress over.
The underside of the mattress is not memory foam.
It is, however, very firm…too firm to sleep on comfortably.
So, use whatever you have handy to soften it.
This is a short-term solution that will relieve your numbness immediately and will cost you nothing.
Long term, a new mattress with NO Memory Foam in it.
Such mattresses come at various price points.
An often-recommended mattress for a woman with fibromyalgia is The Wolf Tulah Plush Eurotop Mattress.
