Seven different mattresses in the past seven years.

Glenn writes:
Hello Pete,

I found your blog while researching beds.

I’m 63 years old. 5’9” and 178 lbs, and athletic build and a side sleeper.
I’m experience lumbar pain in the spinal column only when using my current bed, a twin size Alexander Signature Hybrid by Nest Bedding.
I imagine that sagging at my lumbar region is probably causing compression of my spinal disc and pinching nerves.

We’ve tried about seven different king size mattresses in the past seven years.
Some of them the bed in the box type.
The last bed we bought before our current bed was a king size East King Firm Cushion VIT by Macy’s Hotel Collection. On sale for $4,704.79!!!
It was a nice bed and seemed to perform OK for my lumbar, but I experienced sore hips.
We tried to give it time to adjust, but I never adapted and the hip pain was too much.
Fortunately, we were able to return it for a small penalty.

We currently have two twin size Alexander Signature Hybrid by Nest Bedding.
They came in three firmness ratings, Soft, Medium and Firm, as I remember.  We got a medium and soft.
I sleep on the soft, but have swapped with the wife to try the medium, but I experienced hip soreness on that one too.

So, it’s been a struggle to find a bed that is firm enough to properly support my lumbar as a side sleeper, but not to firm that I experience sore hips during the night.

Some of the beds we’ve had over the past seven years:
– Stearns & Foster Terri Luxury Firm Euro Pillow Top Matt ( Too firm. Hurts hips)
– Simmons Beautyrest Recharge World Class Phillipsburg Luxury Firm Pillow Top (Comfort rating 4.5 purchased from US-Mattress).
– Purple Bed
– Sleep Ovation
– Satvaa Plush Soft
– BoydSleep Night Air Bed

I’m exasperated at trying to find the right bed without buying something that is not going to work for me.
I’d be grateful for any mattress guidance or suggestions.
Thank youGlenn
Hi Glenn,

The problem with today’s mattresses, especially over the last 10 years, is the memory foam upholstery. It’s not a question of degree of firmness, it’s a question of quality components.
The name brands have all been sold. Brands that you could once trust to make a quality mattress are now focused on profits.
All along, memory foam has been the reason why you haven’t been able to find a decent quality mattress.
If you would like to get off of the mattress merry-go-round, and end up with a high quality mattress that provides excellent support, comfort and longevity, then consider the same mattress my wife and I sleep on at home.
We had been a name brand retailer for many years.
When they all went bad, we had to go shopping at the industry trade shows to find high quality products that have no memory foam in them.
There were very few available.
The best we could find is the Natura of Canada Greenspring line of mattresses.
Their coil system is quite firm…using an individually pocketed coil unit with a very high coil count and double tempered steel coils.
The upholstery is natural Talalay Latex, which is the most resilient of all the different upholstery materials. Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years…as opposed to memory foam’s dismal 20+ year record.
Of their 4 models, the Ultra Plush is the most comfortable, without being too soft.
