A mattress for DDD, lower back pain.

Renee writes:
Hi Pete,
I see many people write for mattress advice. I am 4’11 and weigh 150.
I have DDD, (degenerative disc disease), in my lower back.
I sleep on side and stomach, mostly.
I slept on a Beautyrest mattress at a hotel and my pain was gone after only two days.

My pain returned after being home, so I went out and bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress.
Of course, it was very comfortable at first, but after time my back pain worsened.
I do not use it anymore. It made me sleep hot. I’m sleeping on the couch for now.
What is your recommendation?
Regards, Renee
Hi Renee,

What made the hotel mattress such a pain free experience was the individually pocketed coil system, which contours to the shape of the body and maintains the natural alignment of the spine.
Most hotels have mattresses with no memory foam in them.
Unfortunately, Simmons Beautyrest mattresses sold in stores are upholstered with memory foam.
Memory foam is specifically designed to cause a mattress to need frequent replacing.
It sleeps hot and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it’s made.
Memory foam is promoted as the best thing since sliced bread, and a cure for back pain.
It isn’t. Many people like you, experience worsening back pain.
What I’m recommending for you is a mattress that uses that same coil system and has no memory foam in it.
This is a mattress made with natural materials.
It sleeps cool and there’s no off gassing.

The Brolynn Old Fashioned Two Sided  Mattress provides excellent support, comfort and longevity.
It’s available in firm or plush. Both provide the same support. I recommend the Plush model for comfort.

Using an old box spring to support any new mattress will cause premature wear and void the manufacturer’s warranty.
A waterproof mattress protector will extend the life of a mattress by keeping the upholstery materials clean and dry.
