Advice on what mattress to buy to help alleviate some of the pain.

Jayne writes:

Hello Peter,
What I’m after is advice on what mattress to buy to help alleviate some of the pain.
I had spinal surgery, a few years ago, and have now been told I will need to have the same surgery again.
This time, on the upper discs above the original spinal fusion.
I am in constant pain which keeps me awake at night. I just need some restful sleep.
I am a side sleeper, (usually on the right side), with pillows under my back on the left.
My weight is 105 lbs., (7 and a half stone)
I also suffer from MS, Multiple Sclerosis which doesn’t help!
Anything you could suggest would most welcome.
Thank you for your help.
Kind regards, Jayne
Hi Jayne,
The best you can do is to not aggravate and already bad situation.
Keeping your spine in its natural alignment is key.
Avoiding foams that allow you to sink is also important.
The best type of support is had from an individually pocketed coil.
A good coil count with coils made of heavy gauge double tempered steel will wear well.
A mattress like that, upholstered with natural latex will keep you from sinking into it.
I don’t usually recommend this mattress for someone of your size, but the severity of your back pain demands it.
The Natura of Canada Greenspring Ultra Plush Mattress will give you the support your spine requires.
The upholstery is Natural Talalay Latex, which doesn’t allow you to sink.
“Ultra Plush” may sound soft, but because latex is so much more resilient than other foams, it’s not too soft.
The surface feel it provides can be described as “Floating”.
Your MS may make it necessary to add a soft topper, but I recommend waiting until you’ve slept on this mattress for a few nights, before determining if a topper is needed.

Thanks, Pete

A waterproof mattress protector will extend the life of any mattress, keeping it clean and dry.
